Various Names of Chinese Dress |
|
 |
Interestingly, there has not been one definitive name for a Chinese Dress.
The traditional dress originated from China and, strictly speaking, we should follow its Mandarin pronounciation - Qipao.
Till now, most of the Chinese in mainland China and in Taiwan are familiar with this name.
Here are the variations:
Its modern innovation was first developed in the province of Shanghai where it became known as Changshan.
The dress was then popularised by Hong Kong.
The Chinese in Hong Kong speak the Cantonese dialect (instead of Mandarin) and naturally people get used to the Cantonese pronounciation - Cheongsam.
Here are the variations:
- Cheongsam
- Cheongsam Dress
- Cheong Sam
- Cheungsam
- Cheung Sam
- Chong Sam
- Changshan
It would be fair to say that both Qipao and Cheongsam are the accurate names for the dress.
But, honestly, how many non-Chinese could correctly pronouce or even spell out these 2 words?!
Despite the world-wide popularity of the dresses themselves, not many people are aware of any of these 2 names.
It is better known as Chinese Dress.
